Debuting in the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, PRESAFE® Sound technology takes the brand's commitment to protecting passengers in crashes to a new level. Through complex engineering and an acute understanding of the human ear, Mercedes-Benz has designed a way to reduce the impact collisions have on hearing.
How Does Mercedes-Benz PRESAFE® Sound Work?
As part of the comprehensive Mercedes-Benz PRESAFE® suite, PRESAFE® Sound is activated if your vehicle detects that a collision is unavoidable. In such scenarios, PRESAFE® Sound will play a short interference signal through you Mercedes-Benz vehicle's sound system. Called "pink sound" or "pink noise," this interference signal deploys at about 80 decibels, which is roughly equivalent to the level of noise at the side of a busy road.
How Does Mercedes-Benz PRESAFE® Sound Protect Hearing?
PRESAFE® Sound protects hearing by triggering the stapedius reflex. This reflex causes the stapedius muscle to contract, weakening the connection between the ear drum and the inner ear for a split second. By temporarily changing the link between the eardrum and the inner ear, pink noise helps protect your ear against loud noises and can reduce hearing damage that occurs as result of an accident.
